Katy Perry Takes Lady Gaga's 'Born This Way' Acoustic

It seems as though Katy Perry is tired of being labeled as just another pretty pop singer with marginal talent but good producers and a bikini-friendly physique..

So during recent shows, she has momentarily placed the theatrics on hold in order to showcase that she actually has chops. And what better way to accomplish this than to add credibility to overproduced pop records from her chart-topping peers?.

A couple weeks ago, Perry performed stripped-down covers of Willow Smith's "Whip My Hair" and her bff Rihanna's "Only (Girl In The World)." On Monday, she took on Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" at Le Zenith in Paris..

Perry and her accompanying guitarists replaced Gaga's electronic dance track with a slower, acoustic, country folk melody. Perry's vocals were smoky and raspy, vacillating between moments inspired by Bonnie Tyler and Madonna..

I actually like it better than Lady Gaga's version. Perry's rendition puts more emphasis on the lyrics which forces you to pay attention to the words. You can actually more clearly hear and understand the song's message of gay pride. .

In all fairness, Gaga has also performed a toned-down version of "Born This Way" on stage. When playing Toronto's Air Canada Centre last week, the "Paparazzi" singer invited 10-year-old Maria Aragon on stage for a piano duet..

But unfortunately the song got lost in all the shenanigans. It was distracting seeing Lady Gaga in the long, yellow weave, and black, leather bikini, sitting at the piano with Aragon on her lap. As Aragon played the grand piano and sang, Gaga joined in, completely drowning out the special guest..

Perry is winning. Maybe she should follow the lead of Kanye West and Timbaland and release a new song each week. In Perry's case, it should be a new acoustic cover..
